In America's early decades women writers began to take a key role in defining the new Republicanism with their historical analysis. As Professor Sharon Harris says in her introduction, 'The writing and reading of historical narratives was considered essential in the construction of an ''American'' identity.' The writing collected in this volume is unusually fresh and varied: from straightforward reportage to poetic historical narratives, traditional chronicle to travel writing, and historicaldrama to depictions of biblical women. Some works were written as textbooks to supply facts and training in critical thinking to female students.
