A propos de cet article

The 18mo English Elzevir edition published in London by several third-generation bookmen (Andrew Millar, Jacob Tonson the Younger and Richard Tonson, Henry Linton (son of publisher Barnaby Bernard Lintot), and Charles Bathurst). This ten-volume edition is the smaller, more compact, version of the text produced by Pope's literary executor and is in Very Good condition in its original mottled calf binding. Front pastedown of eight volumes have bookplates of Fratelli Salimbeni (with shelving number) and of "G.P.C." (with woodcut image of Pegasus and motto "Nec adversa retorquent") attractively affixed on the front pastedown. William Warburton (1698-1799), literary critic, author, and churchman wrote articles in defense of Pope from religious unorthodoxy. His apologies would result in a close friendship with Pope and he would be bequeathed the copyright to all of Pope's works after his death in 1744. Warburton subsequently published Pope's complete works in 1751. Initially the volumes were published as Octavo. A later edition would be produced in 12mo as nine volumes. This edition features the 24 engraved plates by Charles I. Grignion and is complete as follows: Volume I Containing his Juvenile Poems: 224 pages. [1-10 blank], Advertisement [i] ii-xi, preface [22-24 blank] i-xxxiii, [34-35 blank] 3-187, [222-224 blank]. Containing plates I-III. Volume II Containing his Translations and Imitations: 254 pages. [1-4 blank], [5-9] 2-243, [250-254 blank]. Containing plates IV-VII. Volume III Containing his Moral Essays: 211 pages. [1-4 blank], [5-8], [i-ii] iii-xxvi, [34-37], 1-172, [209-211 blank]. Containing plates VIII-XV. Volume IV Containing his Satires and Etc.: 260 pages. [1-4 blank], [i-iii] iv, 1-2, [11] 4-249, [255-260 blank]. Containing three plates XVI-XVIII. Volume V Containing the Three First Books of the Dunciad: 254 pages. [1-4 uncut blank], [5-10], [i-ii] iii-lxxv, [86-88], 79-237, [248-254 blank] Containing plates XIV-XXII. Volume VI Containing the Fourth Book of the Dunciad and Miscellaneous Pieces in Verse: 239 pages. [1-2 blank], [i-iii] iv-vii [viii], 1-224, [235-239] Containing plates XXIII-XXIV. Volume VII Containing his Miscellaneous Pieces in Prose: [1-4 blank], [5-10], 3-328, [337-441 blank]. Volume VIII Being the First of his Letters: [1-4 blank], [5-6], [i] ii-xxviii, [33-35] 4-324 [355-258]. Volume IX Being the Second of his Letters: [1-4 blank], [5] ii-viii, [12-14] 4-245, [256-260]. Volume X Being the Third of his Letters: [1-4 blank], [5-7] ii-xii, [19-21] 4-324, [343-347 blank]. All volumes are still solidly bound without any defects to the hinges. Very minor shelf ware to edges. Interior pages reveal the lightest hints of foxing and some ghosting around the edges of the first few pages of each volume. 18mo in brown mottled calf with gilt stamping.…
