The scarce complete edition of The Works of Aristotle, The Famous Philosopher, a sex manual and midwifery book, erroneously attributed to be written by Aristotle. Published by L. Rene in c. 1900. First published in 1684.In the publisher's original red cloth, with an engraved colour frontispiece, nine other colour plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated complete.Binding stamp from Tanner and Butler, Frome, to rear pastedown.A book centered on sex, midwifery and how children were born, The Works of Aristotle, otherwise known as The Masterpiece, it quickly became a popular book when first published.Following the Obscene Publications Act in 1857, many booksellers were reluctant to sell the work despite its prior popularity. Some believe that it was only until the 1960s that it was able to be sold again, making this particular edition at the turn of the 20th century ever more special. In the publisher's original red cloth. Externally, smart, with fading and the odd small mark to boards. A crease to the spine, and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Slight edgewear and minor rubbing to joints. Spotting to end papers, and offsetting to rear free end paper.
