Item description from seller

Three volumes. London: Printed for S. Briscoe, and sold by B. Bragg at the Raven in Pater-noster-row, volume I, The Second Edition 1708; volume II, The Second Edition Corrected, 1708; volume III, The Second Edition, 1709. [xx],1-20,23-150,[2],147-272,128pp.; [xvi],160,[viii],96,465-592pp.; [viii],151,[1],144,160pp. With an engraved frontispiece to each volume. §Boyce p.204. ESTC: N25906. Volume II with a second title-page: Letters from the Dead to the Living. The Fifth Edition. 1708; part II of volume II with separate title-page A Continuation or Second Part of The Letters from the Dead to the Living. The Third Edition. 1708. §An additional volume The Fourth Volume of the Works of Mr. Thomas Brown. Which Compleats the Whole Sett. London: Printed for Sam Briscoe. was added in 1711 and survives in two variants. The four volumes are seldom found as a set: volumes I-III - offered here - being a fait accompli; with volume IV added in part as a genuine addition to the canon from authentic sources and in part as a cash-in based on material of dubious authority. The first volume contains an important account of the author by Dr. James Drake ("probably Brown's best friend", Boyce), who - along with his publisher Sam Briscoe - was one of the few who did not desert the poet at his premature end. A very good copy, largely free of foxing, with an early water(?)-stain to preliminaries of the first volume, and some minor worming to part of upper inner margin of volume III - once or twice affecting running title (only). Early ink ownership name of Jonathan Conduit to titles, and of Charles Bransby to volume I pastedown. Later armorial bookplate of Francis White Popham to pastedown of each volume. Bound in contemporary blind-tooled calf, with professional twentieth century reback, original endpapers preserved. (**PLEASE READ CAREFULLY** - Heavy/overweight item weighing 1.8 kg packed, therefore additional postage will be required for overseas orders. International customers, please ask for a prior shipping quote).
