A propos de cet article

Description :

The rare first collected edition in English. Two volumes in one, quarto. 260; [2], 203 pp. Collating complete, with separate title-pages and frontispieces for each volume. Full contemporary mottled calf ruled in gilt with gilt spine. Expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Spine in five compartments with raised bands. Twentieth century armorial bookplate to upper pastedown and corresponding ink ownership inscription to upper flyleaf. Red speckled edges. Some dampstaining to last few leaves at fore-edge. Otherwise a fresh, bright copy throughout. Thomas Cooke's translation of Hesiod, which includes the first English translation of Theogony and the second translation of Works and Days, remained the standard until Sir Charles A. Elton's 1815 edition. Cooke (1703 - 1756) was a prolific translator who is now best remembered for this translation (for which he earned the nickname "Hesiod Cooke") and for featuring in Pope's Dunciad. He also produced translations of Cicero, Virgil, Plautus, and Terence, as well as an edition of Andrew Marvell's poetry. Near Fine. N° de réf. du vendeur 7035

Hardback. Etat : Good+. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. ~Original full speckled tan calf, double gilt fillets framing boards. Raised bands, double gilt fillets, and red gilt label to spine. Blind decor to board edges, worn. Starting at top spine over front and rear hinges (2.5 & 2cm respectively), and a little cracking to middle rear hinge (c. 1.5cm). Wear to board corners; top rear corner slightly bumped. 12mo (10.5 x 16.7cm). Lacking front and rear free endpapers. Cracking at gutter by front and rear pastedowns. Rear hinge slightly tender but holding. Tiny bookseller's label to inside front board. Small area of worm damage extending through from inside rear board to p. xxiii, confined throughout to inner margin with no impact on text. Owner's signature in old hand to half title. Frontis port. engraving of Hesiod by N. Parr. Occasional mild foxing. 4pp. advertisements to rear: 'Books printed for J. Wood and C. Woodward'. Wood and Woodward were the publishers of the 1740 second edition, of which this 1743 edition is a reissue with a cancel title page. Thomas Cooke (1703-1756) was the son of an Essex innkeeper who was by the 1720s earning a living by his pen in London, engaging first in satirical attacks on Tory writers in 'The Battle of the Poets' before achieving 'a wider and deserved reputation by his translations from the classics' (ODNB): his translation of Hesiod first appeared in 1728. The first full English translation of Hesiod (George Chapman had translated Works and Days in 1618 as 'The Georgicks of Hesiod'), Cooke's translation made his name - indeed, he became known thereafter as 'Hesiod Cooke'. It did not, however, endear him to his fellow-translator Alexander Pope, one of his targets in 'The Battle of the Poets', with whom Cooke had various literary contretemps and who included a brief jab at Cooke in the Dunciad. Cooke's Hesiod was to remain the standard edition into the 19th century and had a significant influence on William Blake, who was to engrave Flaxman's illustrations for Cooke's translation and draw on Hesiod for his prophetic works and the introduction to Songs of Innocence and Experience. An early edition of a significant work, in original binding. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 2nd edn, 2nd impr. Hardback.
