A propos de cet article
From the Descriptive Page: THE incident here depicted is one of those which lend to humble life a flavor of heroic interest: this interest proceeds from the element of courage and fortitude in danger. What the errand of the occupants of this boat may have been we know not. The old man in the stern has the air of a superannuated fisherman, and the girls may be his granddaughters. Their return has been hastened by the approach of a tempest. The sky is filled with inky clouds; the water, agitated by fierce gusts of wind, dashes angrily against the boat. A sinister light gleams upon the heaving water and gives relief to the figure of the girl who manages the boat. Her form is sturdy, her arm strong and practised, her eye resolute. The old man holds an oar, but he does little with it save help to steer the boat. The girl manages her oar after the manner of the Venetian gondolier, standing in the stern of the boat and pushing the oar. The eyes both of the man and the maid are fixed intently upon that spot on the distant shore toward which they are hastening; and the gaze of the old man has in it; we fancy, a shade of anxiety. Quite peaceful and serene are the occupants of the other end of the boat. The little girl is, perhaps, no stranger to storms; and her confidence in her older sister and her grandfather is sufficiently strong to give her a sense of safety, or even, it may be, to preclude any thought of danger; while pussy, wrapped snugly in the apron of her little mistress, is as cosy as if she were safely ensconced in the chimney-corner. The picture is thoroughly realistic in treatment, but the feeling that informs it is refined and elevated. Carl Raupp was born at Darmstadt in 1837.
