I. 56. De Stadthouder Sergius Paulus tot den Heere bekeert.Bottom Right Margin: N. I. 56.Rare 1754 Amsterdam Copperplate Engraving: The Conversion of Sergius PaulusAn authentic 18th-century copperplate engraving capturing the conversion of the Roman Proconsul Sergius Paulus and the blinding of Elymas the sorcerer by Saint Paul (Acts 13:6-12). This dramatic judicial scene from the New Testament features a striking assembly of historical figures, rendered with deep linear perspective, classical robes, and fine architectural shadows.18th-Century Dutch ProvenanceThis print originates from a 1754 New Testament volume published in Amsterdam by the cartographers and book publishers Josua and Reinier Ottens. Operating during the Dutch Enlightenment, the Ottens firm was well-known for its illustrated volumes. This specific plate is sequentially marked N. I. 56. in the lower right margin. Dimensions (Full Leaf) Sheet Size: 254 x 206 mm (10.00 x 8.11 inches)Engraving Technique & DetailsDetailed Composition: The left foreground features the sorcerer Elymas (Bar-Jesus) groping blindly in front of a desk supported by a young attendant, having just been struck blind by Saint Paul's rebuke. In the center background, Proconsul Sergius Paulus sits upon an ornate throne watching in astonishment. To the right stands Saint Paul, gesturing with authority alongside Barnabas and an armored Roman soldier holding a spear. The setting is a grand palatial hall with a decorative tiled checkerboard floor, an open window, a draped curtain, and a prominent hanging multi-candle chandelier.Trilingual Inscriptions: Features typography in English, French, and Dutch within the margins:Top Header: The Conversion of Sergius Paulus the Proconsul. Acts. XIII. 6-12.Bottom Inscription: Actor. XIII. 6–12. Le Proconsul Serge Paul converti au Seigneur. De Stadthouder Sergius Paulus tot den Heere bekeert.Plate Impression: The print retains a clear, distinct plate mark from the copper press, with fine line cross-hatching creating rich textural contrast across the geometric floor patterns, the heavy draperies, and the distinct facial features of the assembly.A genuine, nearly 300-year-old print on historic paper. The sheet is stable with a dark, clear image impression, but it shows typical signs of age and significant structural wear along the right margin:Mild, even toning across the paper surface consistent with mid-18th-century paper artifacts.Scattered minor smudging, light handling marks, and faint surface discoloration specks are present primarily within the outer margins. The right edge (the original binding edge) shows severe, heavy rough margins with deep jagged tears, significant chipping, and substantial paper loss from where it was extracted from the volume binding. This wear includes several large notches that break through the right plate mark border line, though they stay entirely clear of the text block and main engraved image area. The top left and bottom right corner tips show minor tattering, well outside the printed text elements.A complete collector's example from the Ottens series, offered in honest, un-restored antique condition with notable margin wear as described.…
