FOLKESTONE (NEW) PIER. Vivid depiction of a cross-channel paddle steamer trying to dock in a gale, approaching the deep-water pier recently erected to allow ships to dock at low water. Manoeuvering in these sea conditions was perilous the men in two rowing boats must catch a line thrown from the steamer, carry it to the pier and attached it to a capstan. Powered by the steam locomotive seen at the pier head, the winch then wound the vessel to the pier. The open construction of the pier provided little shelter against the storm.

ORIGINAL Watercolour on paper, 18 x 12 inches, mounted, framed and glazed in conservation materials. Recently returned from professional removal of old backing board, stabilization and minor restoration. The painting is unblemished and unfaded. A fine watercolour in fine condition. tag William Callow, RWS (1812 - 1908) painted land and seascapes, mainly in watercolour but some in oil - the Victorian heir of the picturesque school epitomised by Prout. Articled at the age of 11 to Theodore and Thales Fielding, he went to Paris in 1829, where he worked under Newton Fielding. In 1831 he exhibited 'View of Richmond' at the Paris Salon, and as a result was appointed drawing master to the family of Louis Philippe. In 1838 was elected to the old Watercolour Society. He exhibited there about 1,400 works. In 1855 he left London and settled in Great Missenden. In 1906, he sold his early works, so successfully that he held an exhibition at the Leicester Galleries in 1907. His work is highly regarded and examples are held in the Tate, Manchester, The Wallace Collection, the Courtauld Institute, the Louvre and most major collections in Europe and USA.
