KRAKAUER, GRETE WOLF. SCENES IN ISRAEL. 1927. ----TITLE [Group of 4 Scenes of Life in Israel.] ----PRODUCTION DETAILS: The images are 12"w x 9 ½"h on sheets 13 ¾"w x 11"h. These are colored lithographs, depicting scenes from the Keren Hayesod (Palestine Foundation Fund) settlements in the Emek Jezreel. Signatures of the artist, Grete Wolf Krakauer, are at the lower right. All but No. 1 are signed in pencil with her name and dated 1927. The lithographs were produced by the art printers "Graphica" under the personal supervision of the artist in Jerusalem in 1927. ---LITHOGRAPHS. Four of her colored lithographs, numbered at the lower left, are in this offering. This set is part of a fold of six identified below. The missing two are identified for those of you who wish to complete the original folder. Only three thousand folders were produced, and no folders or individual lithographs were found for sale on the internet. We do not have those two. 1. Tents in Beth Alpha. Beth Alpha is located at the base of Mount Gilboa in the Valley of Jezreel. It is the site of an ancient synagogue (circa 500 CE). 2. Not included. Beth Alpha as seen from above. 3. Emek Jezreel. Also known as "Plain of Esdraelon" and "Valley of Jezreel". It is a large fertile plain and inland valley in the south of the Lower Galilee region of Israel. It is bordered to the south by the Samarian highlands and Mount Gilboa, to the north by the Lower Galilee, to the west by the Mount Carmel range, and to the east by the Jordan Valley. 4. Nahalal. The first moshav, Nahalal, was established in the Valley of Jezreel in 1921. Moshavim are similar to kibbutzim but emphasize the individual family structure (kibbutzim have communal dining and children sleep in separate housing). 5. Sycamore in Tel-Joseph. Tel-Joseph is a kibbutz. 6. Not included. Kindergarten in Nahalal. ----GRETE WOLF KRAKAUER: The artist Grete Wolf Krakauer was born in Vienna in 1890 and studied art at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. She then studied painting privately with several artists in Germany and Austria. After World War I, she was active in art circles in Vienna. She participated in several exhibitions and friends with Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, with whom she worked with art in a therapeutic setting. She was also a member of the avant-garde artists' group "Bund der Geisitig Tätigen". ----FAMILY: In 1919 she married the painter and architect, Leopold Krakauer (1890-1954), whom she met as part of the group's activities. She immigrated to Israel in 1924 with her daughter (who became an important Israeli archeologist) and husband. He designed numerous buildings in Jerusalem and in kibbutzim and was a well-known artist. Almost her entire family was murdered in the Holocaust and she only returned to Europe once after 1932. She died in Jerusalem in 1970. ----EXHIBITIONS AND AWARDS: ---- H in 1913, just before World War I began, her first solo exhibition was at the Kunstsalon Heller in Vienna. ----In 1922 Grete participated in the Venice Biennale (Biannual). The Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Established in 1895, the Biennale now draws an attendance of over 300,000 visitors at the Art Exhibition. Starting in 1907 several countries began installing national pavilions at the exhibition. After World War I, the Biennale showed increasing interest in modern art. ----In 1926, she won first prize for Painting and Sculpture at the Tower of David Exhibition in the old city of Jerusalem. ---- In 1969, she was the recipient of the Jerusalem Prize for Painting and Sculpture. ---- At age 75 she travelled to the Far East and exhibited in Thailand. ----CONDITION: Clean. Description de la boutique

Luke A Vavra was a map and book dealer using the trade name “Cartographic Arts” for about 25 years until illness forced him to give up the business a few years ago. He and his late wife Patricia had a web site and participated in Map Fairs and Book Fairs from Boston to Miami and west to Denver. In 2023 Luke re-established this business under the name Luke A Vavra Rare Maps and Books. The firm does not have a brick-and-mortar store but would not mind scheduled visitors.
