ARTIST - JAMES S. OGILVY Approximate Size of image: 7.5 X 5.5 inches Approximate Overall Size With Margins: 10.75 X 8.25 inches From the original description - Haling Park is about a mile to the cast, on the ridge of the hill south from Croydon ; the park has lost something of its space, and is fringed on every side with modern houses, so that only from one point can a glimpse of the house be had from the ,outer world ; this has been much altered. the chimneys rebuilt, and mullioned windows have been replaced by wooden sashes, giving it rather a Georgian appearance, but a good deal of the old work remains. In the reign of Edward IV. the manor of Haling was held by Thomas Warham, a citizen of London, from the Archbishop of Canterbury at a rental of twenty-one shillings and one half- penny ; he died about 1478, and, judging from the construction of the older parts of the existing house, it was probably built ,or enlarged by him. The lease passed to William Warham, Archdeacon of Canterbury and nephew of Archbishop Warham from him Henry VIII. took the estate in exchange for other lands. About 1554 it was granted by Queen Mary to Sir John Gage, who also held the manors of Burstow Park and Burstow, Court Lodge ; the first of these he had inherited, the second he held on lease from Archbishop Warham. He was a distinguished soldier during the reigns of Henry viii. and Edward vi., and a member of an ancient Norman family. The Sire de Gaugy named on the Roll of Battle Abbey derived his name from the seignory of Gaugy, near Rouen. Ralph de Gaugy married the. daughter of Henry ii. in 1166 ; Robert, his son, was an adherent of King John, and by marriage with Beatrice Lovel obtained lands in the north of England; his second son, William, was, made Constable of Caermarthen Castle in 1234, and received grants of land in South Wales and Gloucester from Henry iii. His family made their residence at Cirencester until about 1440. CONDITION: Vintage Colour Lithograph. Blank on the back. Comes with descriptive tissue. From a First Edition Publication.
