A propos de cet article

Original tinted lithograph (54 x 37 overall, plate mark 37 x 26.5 cm) by James Duffield Harding after a field drawing by Charles Stewart Hardinge. Sikh soldiers had previously built viewing platforms into the large trees at this outpost to monitor British troop movements, before British pickets took control of the position. In good condition. Some margins have minor nick and tears and some creasing. Originally issued in "Recollections of India. Drawn on Stone by J.D. Harding from the Original Drawings Part I: British India and the Punjab. Part II Kashmir and the Alpine Punjab" (London, Thomas M'Lean, 1847). The series was created after the original field drawings of Charles Stewart Hardinge (the eldest son of the Governor-General of India, Viscount Hardinge). who was present in India in 1845 when the Sikh army crossed the Sutlej and invaded British territory. The plates depict detailed 19th-century landscapes, military fortifications, and local figures from the outer Himalayan and Punjab hill states, such as the Kangra Fort and the domains of Gulab Singh. Hardinge was present in India in 1845 when the Sikh army crossed the Sutlej and invaded British territory. He served as private secretary to his father, Sir Henry Hardinge, first Viscount of Lahore, who was Governor-General of India at the time. 'Hardinge was brought up among artistic influences, and was himself no mean painter in watercolours. In 1847 his friends in England published a folio volume entitled Recollections of India, consisting of twenty lithographs from his drawings made in India, particularly interesting for its portraits of Sikh chieftains and views of scenery in Kashmir, then an almost unknown country, which he visited in company with John Nicholson' (ODNB).…
