A propos de cet article

This 1853 copper engraving by Carl Ferdinand Sprosse (1819 Leipzig – 1874), titled "TEMPIO DI VENERE E ROMA in Roma", presents a romanticized view of the ruins of the Temple of Venus and Roma, once the largest temple in ancient Rome, situated between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. The scene is rendered in exquisite detail, capturing the monument’s partial preservation with its distinctive coffered vaulting still visible amidst nature’s reclamation. Vegetation has overtaken the upper ruins, and the intricate latticework of the apse dome contrasts against a dramatic sky filled with textured, voluminous clouds. Figures animatedly gather at the foot of the ruins, some seated and others engaged in conversation, lending a human scale and narrative to the archaeological remains. The engraving is signed "C. Sprosse 1853" in the lower right, authenticating its creation by the German draughtsman known for his skillful documentation of Italy's classical heritage. Sprosse's works catered to 19th-century European tastes for the picturesque and the classical, popular with travelers and scholars of the Grand Tour era. The print is in overall very good condition, with generous margins and a crisp impression; however, light foxing is visible throughout the border area, typical of antique paper but not detracting significantly from the image’s clarity. The plate mark is pronounced, and all printed text—including the title and location—is clearly legible. Approximate Overall Size: 14 ins x 11 ins . Approximate Image Size: 9 ins x 6 1/2 ins. Condition: Copper Engraving on Period Paper. Blank on the back. Excellent Condition. NOTE THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU PURCHASE: This is a GENUINE VINTAGE/ANTIQUE PRINT. It is NOT a modern reproduction, ie. a laser scan, photocopy etc. It is the original from the vintage/antique publication. This print was published on the date mentioned, or circa of the date mentioned at the top of the page. The term "print" is referred to an image on a piece of paper. The print I have for sale, like many vintage/antique prints that you see online, originate from an antique or vintage book or atlas publication. The publication may not always be known. If you have any questions, emails are welcome. Shipped Unmatted.…
