A propos de cet article

2 volumes, 8vo (16 × 10 cm). Volume I: [1-14], 14-94; 113; 117, [3] pp. advertisements; 126 pp. Volume II: [1-11], 12-108; 224 pp. General title to each volume printed in black, with the Paris imprint of Barrois le jeune added in red. Each work with its own title page. Contemporary French full mottled calf, gilt dentelles, spines richly gilt with floral tools, burgundy lettering-pieces 'Works of Congre' and gilt volume numbers 'Tom I' and 'Tom II'. Handmade marbled endpapers. Some rubbing with slight loss to the binding, a little cracking to the hinge of volume I. Internally clean and tidy throughout with no significant marks. Volume I: The Old Batchelour ('London, Printed for T. Johnson, 1720', with Johnson's device); The Double-Dealer ('London, Printed for the Company of Booksellers', undated, with Johnson's device); The Way of the World ('Writen by Mr. Congreve', 'London, Printed for the Company of Booksellers', undated), with three pages of advertisements for T. Johnson, bookseller in the Hague; Love for Love ('London, Printed for H: Scheurleer F-Z, 1752'). Volume II: The Mourning Bride ('London, Printed for H: Scheurleer, F-Z, 1752') with The Judgment of Paris in continuous pagination; Semele, an Opera ('Printed in the Year 1752') and Poems upon Several Occasions ('By Congreeve', 'Printed in the Year MDCCLIII'), in one sequence. A Hague counterfeit of Tonson's collected Congreve, in an apparently unrecorded two-volume issue with a later Paris imprint. Thomas Johnson, a Scottish bookseller at The Hague from 1712 to 1728, pirated the English stage under false London imprints, his own name and device often in plain view. After his death his remaindered sheets were reissued by Henri Scheurleer the younger. Here three of Johnson's plays, of about 1720-1725, are combined with new Scheurleer printings of 1752-1753 to complete the collection. Johnson's advertisements, left in place at the end of The Way of the World, now sit in the middle of volume I. ESTC records Johnson's Way of the World (T14891) as also issued in a Hague 'Works' with a false Tonson imprint of 1752, styled 'the fifth editton' and arranged in three volumes. The present general titles carry no edition statement and divide the collection into two volumes, the four comedies in the first and the tragedy, masque, opera and poems in the second. They also show a foreign compositor's spellings ('Tragedie', 'Judjement'). The copy shows how these titles were produced. Gathering G of The Mourning Bride has six leaves, against eight elsewhere, with no sign of excision. The verso of G6 bears a clear offset of the volume II general title. The general titles were therefore evidently printed as the final leaves of that sheet and separated before binding. ESTC records the three-volume issue (T231667), with general titles dividing the works differently: the three Johnson comedies in volume I, Love for Love, The Mourning Bride and The Judgment of Paris in volume II, and Semele and the Poems in volume III under a separate title. The present general titles are a distinct setting, rearranging the same sheets into two volumes. We have traced no other copy of this issue. The red Paris imprint was added later. Théophile Barrois le jeune, second son of the Paris bookseller Marie-Jacques Barrois, was not trading in 1752. The Barrois firm became the leading Paris dealer in English and other foreign-language books, and this set appears to be Dutch stock reissued for the French market some decades after printing. A fascinating composite, documenting the Dutch piracy of the English stage and the trade in English books in Paris, in an attractive contemporary French binding. ESTC T14891 (The Way of the World); ESTC N3074 (Love for Love). .…
