William Lowell Randall

William L. (Bill) Randall is Professor of Gerontology at St. Thomas University, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Prior to entering academic life, he served for 11 years as a parish minister with the United Church of Canada, serving pastorates in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and New Brunswick.

A graduate of Harvard College, Princeton Seminary, and the University of Toronto, and a member of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Bill is the author or co-author of over 60 publications on a unique approach to understanding later life called Narrative Gerontology. These include the books: "The Stories We Are" (University of Toronto Press, 1995/2014), "Restorying Our Lives" (Praeger, 1997), "Ordinary Wisdom" (Praeger, 2001), "Reading Our Lives: The Poetics of Growing Old" (Oxford University Press, 2008), and "The Narrative Complexity of Ordinary Life: Tales from the Coffee Shop" (Oxford UP, 2015).

He has been chief co-organizer of three international conferences called "Narrative Matters," is co-editor of the online, peer-reviewed journal "Narrative Works," and is a founding member of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Narrative, based at St. Thomas University. He has been an invited presenter, workshop facilitator, or keynote speaker at conferences geared toward academics and practitioners in Canada, the US, the UK, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, and Spain.

Bill joins a growing number of researchers and practitioners who acknowledge the power of “narrative care” in promoting emotional well-being and personal growth in later life. His most recent book is "In Our Stories Lies Our Strength: Aging, Spirituality, and Narrative" (KDP, 2019).

Book projects in which Bill is currently involved include "New Meanings from Old Tales: Stories for the Second Half of Life" and "Things that Matter: Resilience, Reminiscence, and the Role of Special Objects in the Stories of Our Lives" (forthcoming, University of Toronto Press).
