Denys J. Wilcox

Denys J. Wilcox was born in 1970 and was educated at Malvern College and gained his Ph.D. from Bristol University. His book on The London Group of artists was published by Scolar Press in 1995 and was followed by a monograph on the British abstract painter Margaret Geddes. His other publications include a catalogue raisonné of the post war St. Ives artist Tom Early and a major book on the painter and sculptor Rupert Lee who was President of The London Group between the wars. He has contributed many articles to art and literary journals including 'Apollo', 'The Burlington Magazine' and 'The London Magazine'. He also runs The Court Gallery in Somerset, specialising in twentieth-century British and French art (www.courtgallery.com). In 2011 he co-curated The Camden Town Group Centenary Exhibition at The Fine Art Society, London. He recently curated an exhibition and published a catalogue entitled 'André Derain and The Bloomsbury Group'. In 2013 he contributed to 'Uproar - The First Fifty Years of The London Group' - a centenary exhibition and book organised by the Ben Uri Gallery, London and published 'Bryan Senior: The Early Paintings' which coincided with an exhibition in Cork Street. His 2014 catalogue 'Modern British Art' features new essays by Dr Wendy Baron, Professor Michael J. K. Walsh and Nicholas Skeaping. In 2015 he published the first monograph about the Somerset based sculptor Maggie King. In collaboration with the Museum of Somerset in Taunton he curated the exhibition 'A Fragile Beauty: The Camden Town Group in The Blackdown Hills 1909-1925' in 2017 and published the catalogue written by Richard Emeny. A comprehensive monograph about the early paintings of Kenneth Lauder was published in July 2018. In 2019 he co-curated the exhibition - 'A Life in Colour: The Art of Doris Hatt' at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton and his book 'The Art of Doris Hatt' was published by the South West Heritage Trust in association with The Court Gallery.
