Copy 122 of 650 (750) bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in quarter-black morocco over tan cloth-covered boards, t.e.g., gold-blocked illustration to upper board, gilt title to backstrip. Mark Severin's semi-erotic style is here more restrained in the service of classical subjects, resulting in a well-balanced and handsome book somewhat reminiscent of earlier small folio GCP glories such as the 'True Historie of Lucian the Samosatenian'. Cave and Manson however criticise some details, such as the erroneous setting of the two footnotes of the introduction in different faces. Very Good (a few scattered foxing spots to some pages but sparing the engravings, tiny inscription in red ink to second front endpaper, lower board very slightly mottled). Cockalorum 177.

Number '10' of 100 specially bound copies signed by the translator, from an overall limitation of 750. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some very slight fading of colouring to the spine. Small folio; wood-engraved frontispiece, pictorial title and twelve half-page wood-engravings by Mark Severin, title in red & black. The publisher's original pictorial red morocco with gilt decorations by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. The top edge gilt, others are uncut. Housed in the original cloth slip-case. Loosely laid in is a two sided Publisher's Prospectus which is in Fine condition. An excellent example of this special edition, with the splendid illustrations by Belgian-born artist & graphic designer Mark Severin, famous for his miniaturised work, bookplates, erotic studies and graphic design work for companies including Imperial Airways and the London Underground. A fine copy in the slipcase, which is a little browned and rubbed. 18 wood engravings by Mark F. Severin. First collected edition. No. 474 of a total edition of 520 copies, 20 of which were numbered I to XX, signed, and with three additional wood engravings. Séverin fils, a graphic designer and master engraver, published this collection of the poetry of Séverin père in 1951, twenty years after his father's death. The production values are fittingly high for such an object: it carries eighteen of the son's wood engravings and is printed on velin de Rives, the whole housed in a chemise and slipcase. An excellent copy.
