Sophia Frangou

Sophia Frangou, MD, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Born in Greece, Dr. Frangou received her training in psychiatry and neuroscience at the Maudsley Hospital and at King’s College London. She headed the Section of Neurobiology of Psychosis at King’s College London before migrating to the USA in 2013 to join the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Sophia Frangou is an international authority on psychotic disorders, particularly schizophrenia and bipolar illness and the effects of genetic risk and disease on brain networks. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the European Psychiatric Association and international Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. She is founding chair of Section of NeuroImaging of the European Psychiatric Association and of the Brain Imaging Network of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. She is editor of “European Psychiatry” and associate editor of “Human Brain Mapping”. She has authored over 200 scientific papers and has co-authored “Schizophrenia”, a guide to the aetiology and treatment of the disorder that has been translated in many languages. Dr. Frangou is a member of the steering committee of the Women’s Leadership initiative of the Society of Biological Psychiatry and the International Society for Bipolar Disorders.
