Geraldine Bridgewater worked in the City of London for nearly twenty years starting as a telex operator before being authorized to trade in the ring as the first woman dealer on the London Metal Exchange. Her struggle to achieve equality and become a trader during the 70’s and 80’s was recorded in the Press and Radio. Newspaper and magazine articles followed her steps from lowly beginnings to the peak of success in an environment that was proud to call itself, ‘A male dominated bastion’.

From lowly beginnings as a telex operator and general assistant, she rose to the dizzy heights of dealing in the famous ‘Metal Ring’ at The London Metal Exchange. Geraldine broke with convention to become the first woman to trade in the hectic ring of The London Metal Exchange where millions of pounds change hands everyday through open outcry.

Trading for nearly twenty years in metals, the story tells how she made money, developed her own trading system and was famous for her gold price predications. So famous she was dubbed Gold-bug Gerry by the London Evening News. The pinnacle of her career was reached when she was able to trade tens of thousands of tons of copper for China and become one of their main brokers on the Metal Exchange.

In 1983 Geraldine was granted the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of her achievements.
