With a degree in English and Secondary Education, MAVIS DUKE HINTON has published five novels of THE DACHSHUND ESCAPADES series as well as one nonfiction book.
She taught all levels of English and related subjects in her 23-year career, Other pursuits have included publications editor, office administrator, and police officer.
Married since 1970 to her husband Clark, a retired science teacher, they have two married daughters and three grandchildren. Sarge in her books is based upon their "granddawg," Shadow. Although her books are fiction, Sarge's tales are based on real-life family and friends. With a special affinity for dogs--dachshunds in particular--her books were written from the dog’s point of view. Her hobbies include traveling, reading, writing, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and stimulating conversation.
Raised in a military family, she lived in France and Germany in her childhood, beginning her schooling in a French parochial school and becoming fluent in French in the process. On trips across Europe, they enjoyed medieval castles in Germany, the World's Fair in Belgium, the Tulip Festival in Holland, and a bull fight in Spain.
She has also traveled across the USA and Canada, and lived in eight U.S. states, with Alaska being her favorite of all.
Her Christian faith influences all aspects of her life, including her choices and writing.
She presented workshops at education conferences on creating and utilizing videos of student-composed skits and interviews with literary characters and authors. Her motto: "Learning English should be fun."
Ms. Hinton has also taught Bible studies ranging from first grade children to adult women, and has been a speaker at Christian women's groups.
Since retiring, she now spends her time enjoying church activities, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
