Josephine Belloso

A Professor Emeritus of St. Joseph’s College in New York, Josephine Belloso has been a professional artist as well as a teacher. She has received numerous commissions, some of which include: the 14 Stations of the Cross, carved in wood for St. Paul’s Abbey in Newton, New Jersey, as well as an eight foot relief sculpture of St. Benedict for the entrance of their monastery church. She also created a nine-foot relief sculpture of the Holy Family for the façade of the Dillon Child Study Center of St. Joseph College.

Additional commissions include a three-foot Madonna of Redemption carved in wood for St. Gabriel’s Monastery in Pennsylvania as well as a bronze portrait bust of her grandfather, Dr. Lucio Oquendo, for an outdoor plaza in San Cristobal, Venezuela. Her bronze portrait bust of André Girard is with the collection of his works at his Atelier in Paris, France. She edited a book about André Girard, published by Queensborough Community College in New York, and restored five of his hand-painted 70 mm films on the life of Christ, as well as Girard’s last film, The Story of Abraham.

Further commissions: a portrait of Msgr. Martin O’Dea for Holy Family Parish; a statue of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini for The Catholic Alumni Club of NYC; and a relief sculpture of The Holy Family, commissioned by the faculty of Marymount Manhattan College for the departure of Sr. Edmund Harvey, RSHM, former Dean.

Throughout her career, Ms. Belloso was named Artist in Residence at Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania as well as at Queensborough Community College in New York, where she was also appointed Curator for the Retrospective André Girard Art Exhibition and Film Festival in 1982. She has received several national awards for her religious sculptures from Paul VI Institute of the Arts in Washington, D.C. As an educator, she most enjoyed the adventure of taking students throughout Italy, England, France and Spain to study the Art and Architecture of Western Europe.
