I have been an avid sci-fi reader for several decades, and cut my teeth reading Asimov, E. E. Doc Smith, Alan Dean Foster and such like. In more recent times Andy Weir’s The Martian, and absolutely everything penned by the fantastic Peter F Hamilton inspired me to think about what space story I would write if I was an author.

What happened next was that no ideas were written down at all. Over the next eight months, I wrote the first in The Fold Series, from beginning to end. No planning, no notes, just seat of the pants writing. It just evolved in chapter order. It needed editing of course, but it was there, and the response from the first beta readers was fantastic.

I had apparently become a “pantser” style of writer, and after recently meeting Lee Child, who is a self-confessed pantser, I’ve concluded I’m in good company and that pantsing isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The first two novels in the Fold series have been written during 2017 and 2018 while we were living in Brisbane, Australia. In late August of 2018 we returned to the UK, and as I write this in a pretty village in Dorset, the third in series is quickly evolving.

I write the kind of stories I would like to read. The Fold Series, as Andy Weir has done with The Martian, is set a little in the future, and based around NASA technology. I like real characters, normal everyday people put into extraordinary circumstances, with realistic reactions and language. I know I wouldn’t say “gosh” if a 14km-long alien battle ship appeared next to me.

If you love a non-stop action space adventure with believable characters, huge starships and awesome weaponry then you really should give The Fold Series a read.
