A feminine thread weaves throughout my life. Growing up in the Texas Panhandle, I made snow-women instead of snowmen (yes, it snowed there every winter). “Sleeping Beauty” was one of my favorite fairytales. Like her, I figuratively pricked my finger on the spindle during adolescence and fell asleep to myself. As a young woman, I feigned interest in masculine pursuits. Life became dry, and the inertia of depression descended. When I woke up, a fiery desire for the feminine presence––for a connection with that side of life––took hold. I pursued her through education, reading, writing, therapy, women’s gatherings. It was in solitude that she revealed herself to me. This gift of grace continues to move me, fascinate me, lend purpose to my daily life. I am interested in women’s power: where it comes from, what it looks like, how it has been silenced and the ways in which it is becoming visible today.
