Lorraine Simpson became an author at the age of 61, inspired by two very special encounters: one with the mountain gorillas of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the other with her six-year-old granddaughter, whose fascination with Lorraine’s stories brought the adventure vividly back to life.

A lifelong traveller, international tourism strategist, travel writer and television travel expert, Lorraine has visited more than 100 countries and spent much of her career encouraging others to explore the world with greater curiosity. Yet it was Uganda—with its extraordinary wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and warm, welcoming people—that captured her heart in a way few other places had.

After returning home from Bwindi, Lorraine shared stories of the gorillas with her granddaughter. Her excitement, questions and sense of wonder inspired Lorraine to write her first children’s book, introducing young readers to the magic of the forest and the remarkable animals that live there.

That first story led naturally to a second book: a personal guide to the Uganda Lorraine has come to know and love. Through it, she hopes to take away some of the uncertainty people may feel about visiting Africa, share the experiences and places that have meant the most to her, and inspire others to discover this remarkable country for themselves.

Lorraine believes that travel can change the way we see the world—and that a new adventure can begin at any age.
