Bjørn Egge

Bjørn Egge (1918–2007) was a Norwegian major general, wartime prisoner and humanitarian. Born in Kristiansand, he was a cadet at Akershus Fortress when Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940. Captured at sea in 1942 as a crewman on the Kvarstad ship Charente, he was sentenced by a German court and held as a Nacht und Nebel prisoner in Sonnenburg and Sachsenhausen until the White Buses freed him in 1945.

After the war he served in Norwegian military intelligence, as chief of intelligence for the UN forces in the Congo in 1961, where he was sent to Ndola after the crash that killed Dag Hammarskjöld, and as defence attaché in Moscow. He helped found the International Peace Academy in 1968 and ended his career as commandant of Akershus Fortress. From 1981 to 1987 he was president of the Norwegian Red Cross, and later president of the World Veterans Federation.

A Warrior for Peace is his memoir, first published in Norway as Kriger for fred. His family maintains his archive.
