Barry Stocker

I am a British philosopher in Istanbul where I teach at Istanbul Technical University. I have a BA in Philosophy and an MA in Philosophy and Literature from the University of Warwick I have a doctorate from the the University of Sussex for a thesis in philosophy and literature. My philosophical work draws on Continental European Philosophy since Kant and related approaches within the history of philosophy, including the writings of Michel de Montaigne and Giambattista Vico. I find Vico's philosophical and interpretation of Homer particularly fascinating along with Montaigne's exploration of himself through writing and an abundance of allusions to great texts along with other forms of writing and cultural memory. Favourites among post-Kantian European philosophers include Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault, who I like to think of as continuing the approaches of Montaigne and Vico. I have also written and edited books on Ludwig Wittgenstein and Jacques Derrida. I work on topics in aesthetics, philosophy and literature, political philosophy and ethics as well as commentary on those philosophical figures I find most interesting. My research includes the following themes: liberal, republican and libertarian political thought; subjectivity, pluralism and literariness in ethics; philosophy of Europe; historical, aesthetic, cultural and literary ways of doing philosophy.
