Item description from seller

Interwar Copenhagen city map integrating street plan, tramway system, and indexed navigation, issued at the height of Denmark’s early modern transit era. Issued in 1930, this folding tourist and navigation map presents Copenhagen at a moment when urban planning, public transit, and automobile regulation were becoming inseparable aspects of modern city life. Designed for active use rather than decoration, the map combines a detailed street plan with a dedicated tramway diagram and a substantial alphabetical street index, offering a layered navigational system intended for both residents and visitors navigating an increasingly regulated city. Physical Description: Large-format folding color map printed on period paper stock, housed in the original printed cardstock folder with illustrated cover. Recto presents a detailed street plan of Copenhagen; verso includes a specialized schematic map of tramway routes. Accompanied by a separate multi-page index booklet listing streets alphabetically with grid references, along with transportation notes and orientation information. Map unfolds to approximately 27.6 × 27.7 inches (70.3 × 70.5 cm). Folder measures approximately 5 × 8.5 inches when folded. Condition: The bindings are tight and square. Map and index booklet are clean, with light, even age-toning consistent with period paper stock. The folding holder shows modest handling wear at edges and corners. Overall very good retention of color and legibility. First Edition. Scarcity Note: Institutional holdings are limited. OCLC/WorldCat records only two copies, both held in Danish institutional collections, with few comparable examples appearing in the trade. . This map exemplifies the transitional moment in early twentieth-century urban cartography when pictorial representation gave way to functional, systems-based navigation. Rather than functioning solely as a souvenir, it operates as a working document, integrating street geography, public transit infrastructure, and regulatory information into a single navigational tool. The inclusion of a dedicated tramway diagram and a substantial alphabetical index reflects Copenhagen’s reliance on public transportation and the growing expectation that city space be read, planned, and navigated methodically. As such, the map serves equally as a tourist aid, a civic instrument, and a record of interwar urban modernization. Contextual / Historical Significance: Produced during the interwar period, the map documents Copenhagen’s maturation into a modern, transit-oriented capital city. Its emphasis on tramways, regulated movement, and indexed navigation aligns with broader European trends in municipal planning and infrastructure development during the late 1920s and early 1930s. There is no known film adaptation or direct cinematic tie-in. Subjects: Copenhagen city planning, interwar Europe, tramway systems, public transportation history, tourist cartography, municipal infrastructure, Scandinavian urban design, Cartography, Urban History, Transportation Studies Folding color map with separate index booklet in original printed cardstock holder.
