A propos de cet article

(Games, Nineteenth-Century Ephemera, English Amusements) SPOONER, William. THE JOURNEY, OR CROSS ROADS TO CONQUEROR'S CASTLE. AN INTERESTING GAME. London: Wm. Spooner, 259 Regent Street, [between 1831-1836]. FIRST EDITION. Square 16mo (5-13/16" x 5-13/16"). Original dark green cloth covered boards with publisher's printed paper label pasted to front cover, title printed within a hand-colored central blue square on label; minor rubbing and wear along upper edge and across lower fore-edge corner of label, lacking original ribbon ties. Houses a 12-section hand-colored lithographed game board printed on a folded, linen-backed sheet of stiff paper measuring 21-3/4" x 16-1/2" when unfolded, pasted to inside lower cover; [2] pp. "Rules of the Game" pasted to inside upper cover. Lacking original game pieces, counters, and "Circle of Chance" spinner. The physical condition of the item is graded VERY GOOD + (utilizing the standard antiquarian book grading scale for works on paper). Published during William Spooner's operating period at 259 Regent Street in London, this rare tabletop board game exemplifies the flourishing early nineteenth-century market for moralistic and educational juvenile entertainments. Designed for two or more players navigating toward "Conqueror's Castle," the gameplay relies on a "Circle of Chance" spinner to dictate player movement across the branching paths, where players negotiate forfeits and payments using counters. The artwork features twelve beautifully detailed hand-colored lithographed panels depicting intersecting roads, whimsical milestones, and romantic landscapes. Retaining remarkable physical integrity, the folding sheet remains backed on its original structural linen, preserving vibrant contemporary hand-coloring with only minor, unobtrusive spotting restricted to the outer margins. Early nineteenth-century linen-backed board games were active playthings subject to frequent handling, resulting in heavy wear, panel separation, and widespread loss over time. Complete surviving examples in original cloth covers with unsevered linen hinges remain exceptionally uncommon on the antiquarian market. A current global sweep of the OCLC/WorldCat database locates only eight copies preserved in institutional special collections worldwide, underscoring its pronounced institutional scarcity and exceptional state of preservation. AN EXTRAORDINARY AND VIBRANT 1830S HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHED BOARD GAME BY WILLIAM SPOONER IN ORIGINAL CLOTH BINDING, REPRESENTING A CRITICAL ACQUISITION FOR INSTITUTIONAL SPECIAL COLLECTIONS OR EXTRAORDINARY PRIVATE COLLECTIONS DEVOTED TO THE HISTORY OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY GAMES, JUVENILE AMUSEMENTS, OR GRAPHIC EPHEMERA.…
