A propos de cet article

A rare and fine folded map in original slipcase. The map covers England, Wales, lower Scotland with the upper part of Scotland on an inset map. The eastern coast of Ireland is also represented along with north-west France. Paris is shown as an extrusion to the lower margin; Scilly Isles also shown as an extrusion to the left margin. English and Welsh counties have outline colouring, otherwise further outline colouring is confined to marking countries. Part of the clarity of the map is in that only main routes are marked (with double lines). Key peaks are marked in all countries with heights given (e.g. Benwyvis 3720 fet). The map is enhanced by exquisite drawn images of packet, post and passage ships, on key routes including one to the Orkney Islands. Arguably, the finest of these is the packet ship drawn south of The Lizard and measures less than 2mm across. In the French section the roads are subdivided by markers for French posts. The proposed Dieppe to Paris canal is also marked. A further note on the upper margin distinguishes between ordinary roads and military ones within Scotland. The map is dated 25th July 1789. At this time, the French Revolution was in full flow with the storming of the Bastille having occurred on 14th July of that year. Sayers desire to represent this part of France on the map would be of importance to his customers. Condition: minimal wear to folds. No holes. Slight spotting and marking to rear. Map face is bright with only the odd minor scuff. Slipcase, marbled, has some superficial wear with the odd spot and a later small circular label. The sides are firm and the construction is rigid. Original label with the address being Fleet Street and with the price of 7/6. Dimensions: 77cm by 60cm approx. More details available on request. (non244iri).…
