Map 27: This regional map shows part of northern France including: Dourlens, Douriers, Picardie etc. Early 18 th. c. etching / engraving with original hand colouring on a verge type hand laid paper. Description: This rare plate originates from: 'Atlas Nouveau du Voyageur pour les Dix-Sept Provinces des Pais-Bas. . Par le Sr. Sanson. Geographe du Roy.', Published in Amsterdam by Pierre Mortier, non-dated, but we found reference to 1701. Ref: Koeman A.N.III: Mor10, p. 19. This atlas contains 35 maps and must be very scarse as we found only one auction record and no other sales references. Collector's item. Geographer of the King.)Artists and Engravers: Mapmaker: Nicholas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600-1667) and his descendents were important French cartographer's active through the 17th century. Sanson started his career as a historian where, it is said, he turned to cartography as a way to illustrate his historical studies. In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work, appointed Sanson 'Geographe Ordinaire du Roi'. Sanson's duties in this coved position included advising the King on matters of Geography and compiling the royal cartographic archive. Sanson's corpus of some three hundred maps initiated the golden age of French Cartography. Publisher: Pieter und David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter's death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house 'Covens and Mortier' (1685-1866) in Amsterdam. Most likely this company was the largest map trader of his days. Thousand of maps were brought on the international market by Covens & Mortier, often edited from earlier sources and all members of this firm were gifted with a great commercial talent.
