De Belgische kunstenaar Sergio De Beukelaer (°1971, Antwerpen) werkt al meer dan twintig jaar aan een zelfbewust en compromisloos oeuvre van schilderijen. Het werk van Sergio De Beukelaer lijkt eenvoudig en kleurrijk maar verenigt allerlei schijnbare tegenstellingen. Hoewel zijn schilderkunst strak, formeel, geometrisch en abstract oogt, vertrekt het altijd vanuit een sterk verlangen naar de werkelijkheid. Het is niet de werkelijkheid zelf die hem interesseert. Het gaat hem om een vertaling ervan. Sergio De Beukelaer streeft in dat opzicht niet naar imitatie of navolging. Door beeldend denken en handelen bereikt hij altijd een bepaalde vorm van abstractie binnen het formele kader van de schilderkunst. Schijnbaar moeiteloos laveert zijn kunst tussen oppervlakte en ruimte, tekst en beeld, intellectuele ernst en speelse ironie, schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst. Via het originele en onnavolgbare concept van "fat.canvas", een driedimensionaal schilderij, doorbreekt de kunstenaar de grenzen van de klassieke schilderkunst. Zijn schilderijen eigenen zich de ruimte toe en genereren een krachtige visuele impact op hun omgeving. (cat.) is een gedurfde en prachtige monografie van schilderijen en installaties die eenvoudig lijken, maar een verscheidenheid aan paradoxen combineren.
De Beukelaer gebruikt tal van codes van de postmodernistische kunst uit de jaren 1960 en 1970, zoals abstractie, geometrie, monochroom en de "hard edge" techniek, maar hij doet dat met een ironie en speelsheid die niet te rijmen valt met de houding van minimalisten en fundamentele schilders.
