Lightner was the pen name of Alice Lightner Hopf (1904 1988), an American writer best known for her science fiction works aimed at young men. She published under the name A.M. Lightner primarily to navigate the male-dominated world of science fiction, where the work of female authors were often not taken seriously. Despite being aimed at teens, Lightner's works are distinguished by imaginative plots, ethical and social engagement, and thoughtful exploration of alien cultures. Lightner s most acclaimed novel was the remarkably forward-thinking The Day of the Drones (1969), which examined themes of social control, autonomy, and gender in a dystopian society. In addition to her science fiction work, Lightner also wrote nonfiction under her full name, Alice L. Hopf. These works primarily focussed on zoology and natural history. Lightner has left behind a dual legacy as both a writer of science fiction, and a science communicator and educator. Three of the books are from Alice Hoyt's personal library, as evidenced by her address label on the front free end page. These books also have the address label of her agent, Larry Sternig, whose company is still in business today. 1400769. Special Collections.
