SAMUEL BARRETTE MILES, PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, Professor of Arabic in the University of Oxford. Text in English with quotations and examples in Arabic, Greek and Latin, 4to, approximately 315 x 235 mm, 12½ x 9¼ inches, 7 engraved plates including 1 folding map of Alexandria, pages: xiii, 127, pages 126-127 misnumbered 226-227, bound in half calf over marbled sides, gilt dividing lines, rebacked to match with gilt decoration and lettering. Corners worn, board showing slightly at tips, marbled paper darkened along edges, a few small pieces of marbled paper missing, bookseller's tiny label, reference library bookplate presented by Mrs Miles in memory of her husband Col. Samuel Barrette Miles in 1920, author of "THE COUNTRIES AND TRIBES OF THE PERSIAN GULF" and neat ink library numbers on front pastedown, small unobtrusive blind library stamp to title page, 3 text pages and to each plate, slight faint foxing to margins of plates, pages next to plates faintly browned, very slight faint foxing to 3 images, contents otherwise bright and clean, binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Joseph White (1745-1814), orientalist and theologian has inscribed the title page at the top: 'J. Newell from the Author'.
