First edition (per publisher's requisite statement upon copyright page) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY EDITOR LUTHER CLARK. xxii, 442 pages. Hardcover: H 20.75cm x L 14cm. Dust jacket toned with some soiling; 2.5cm deep chip to spine head; tearing to front flap fold; other lesser chips and tears and several creases; strong vertical crease to rear flap; front flap's top corner is clipped; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Aquamarine cloth; gilt lettering to spine and front board. Text block edges and endpapers toned/foxed. Co-editor's three-line ink inscription "With very highest personal | regards to Dr. Walter B. Jones | Luther Clark" on front free endpaper verso; some interior foxing with a few shallowly creased corners. Binding is firm. Some foxing to foldout map which is present in rear pastedown pocket. Quite uncommon WPA state guidebook made more exceptional for being signed by a member of its editorial staff. State tour map on front endpapers. Sponsored by the Alabama State Planning Commission; Foreword by Governor Frank M. Dixon; Preface by State Supervisor William H. Bunce and editors Jack Kytle and Luther Clark; numerous b/w plates in eight sections of unpaged leaves; maps of Birmingham, Mobile, and Montgomery amongst text; four appendices including chronology, bibliography, 1940 census figures, and index.
