A propos de cet article

A very good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding inscribed and signed by the author. This copy was given to the Traill family of Orkney. It is inscribed on the front free endpaper 'To Mrs & Dr Trail of Woodwick in grateful remembrance of a happy time spent at 'Holland' North Ronaldsay in the summer of 1877, John T Reid 20th July 1878. James Traill, an Edinburgh lawyer purchased North Ronaldsay in 1727 and built Holland House, in the small settlement of Hollandstoun. It became the Laird's house and presumably was where Reid stayed. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and is sound and tight. The red cloth has bright decoration in gilt and black - with an image of cliffs in gilt, and complicated designs on the boards, and decoration and titles on the spine. The board edges are bevelled. The spine is dulled and there is fading to the board edges. There are a couple of paler areas on the front board. The corners have been rebuilt. All page edges gilted. The original endpapers are present with professional repair to the joints. As well as the inscription, there is an old ownership signature on the front free endpaper. The contents are complete with frontispiece (new tissue guard), vignette title, preface, listings and text pp 1-183 with numerous small illustrations and 40 full page plates. There are 4pp adverts at the rear. The illustrations are from sketches by Reid engraved by the Dalziel brothers. It is very clean internally with the occasional small spot or mark. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.…

Description de la boutique

We are a small online bookselling business specialising in rare and unusual books, generally published before 1900, with a focus on natural history, history, illustrated works and some literature. We are based in the beautiful Orkney Islands and have a specialist Orkney/Shetland section in our listings. We run a bookshop in Orkney - Birsay Books - where we have a wide range of stock from science fiction and fantasy to maritime and, of course, Orkney/Shetland and Scottish material. We take images of all of our books to supplement the online descriptions, and are always happy to provide more on request. When you order from us, we ensure that books are properly packed to protect their condition and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for additional security. Because we are based on an island which depends on ferries and flights for shipping, we can not guarantee 'next day' delivery. We will simply get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can.…
