As one of the first women of color to become a supermodel, Iman found that most makeup artists had little idea how to handle her unique skin tones. Neither did the available beauty products take into account the wide range of skin tones that defy categorization whether African, Latina, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern or ethnic mixes. In both her products and this book, Iman embraces skin of all tones, and teaches her readers how to work with colors and skin care regimens targeted to their exact skin tone and type.

The book itself is a work of a beauty, with stunning color photographs and images on every page, comprising five main sections:

Born in Somalia in 1955, the daughter of an African diplomat, Iman was studying political science at Nairobi University when she was discovered by photographer Peter Beard who arranged for her to come to the United States to begin a career in modeling. Her first assignment was for American Vogue in 1975, and she quickly went on to become the most successful black model and a star on international runways and in magazines. Iman continued at the top of her field for more than a decade, appearing in countless magazines and advertising campaigns. In 1994, she started IMAN Cosmetics for skin of color and, in 2000, she launched a second line, I-IMAN Makeup.
The mother of two daughters, she lives with her husband, musician/actor David Bowie, in New York City.
