Item description from seller

Exhibition Catalog. One of the earliest - and most beautiful - books on the art and achievement of Celia Paul. The first and only edition. Published in a tiny, one-time-only print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Special Edition is now rare. The book is beautifully produced in an austerely elegant format, with black titles on the white covers, etching reproductions on the cover and inside pages, a brief Essay by Mark Balakjian, and full Catalog List appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper by Marlborough Graphics Limited in London to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition held at the Marlborough Gallery London from September 20 through October 19, 1991. Presents "Celia Paul: Etchings". Characterized by the great figurative painter's lapidary brilliance while echoing - and paying homage to - the unsurpassed draftsmanship tradition of such figures as Rembrandt and Goya, among others. At her very best, Celia Paul's own draftsmanship is on a level that is comparable to R.B. Kitaj and David Hockney. Unlike them, all of her subjects are familial or near-familial: Her grandmother, mother, sister, cousins, and closest friends. In other words, hers is an intimate, inner world and inner life, rather than about external subjects or (in the case of Goya, for example) great historical events - yet no less valuable and moving as such. This is Celia Paul's affirmation as an artist who no longer works as a humanist but as a modernist who owes a debt of gratitude to the past. "They make me think about life, about human compassion" (Mark Balakjian). An absolute "must-have" title for Celia Paul collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and post-dated in black pen-marker on the title page by the artist: "Celia Paul April 28th 2026". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art book collectible. This is the only such signed and post-dated copy of the First Edition/First Printing (Exhibition Catalog) available online and despite its imperfection (slight wear on the fragile softcover corners, but it's there) is still in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. 21 plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century and our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CELIA PAUL TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).
