BOOK DESCRIPTION: Ix,199 pgs, portrait plates, illustrations, map. Original blue cloth with gilt title on cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Presentation from author on front blank preliminary page. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing to spine ends and corners; rear cover spotted, title gilt bright. Interior with author's inked presentation on front free endpaper; else pages are clean and tight. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Enlisting in the 2nd New York Cavalry in 1862, Henry C. Meyer took part in several important engagements and rose to the rank of captain. He fought with Gregg at Gettysburg. Later transferring to the 24th NY Cavalry, he was severely wounded on June 17, 1864, while saving the life of a fellow officer. For this, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; “for actions during an assault and in the face of a heavy fire rendered heroic assistance to a wounded and helpless officer, thereby saving his life and in the performance of this gallant act sustained a severe wound.” (MoH citation). Also includes some material related Gen. George A. Custer, with portrait. The 2nd NY Cavalry is identified as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. REFERENCE: DORNBUSCH NY#88: “Mustered in 2nd New York cavalry July 21, 1862; discharged to accept promotion, January 1864; mustered in 24th New York cavalry, February 21, 1864.” NEVINS: I pg 130: “Though moving and human, this account shows signs of having been greatly embellished; Meyer served in two New York cavalry regiments.” FOX 300 pg. 187 “Called the ‘Harris Light ‘ in honor of the Honorable Ira Harris, of Albany, N. Y. then United States Senator. The Second was ably officered and was one of the most famous of the New York cavalry regiments.”.
