They are the bedrooms of dead young American soldiers, in the homes where they were born and grew up, left "as is" by their grieving parents: An 18-year-old man's diplomas, awards, and trophies neatly and proudly on display. Another bedroom overflowing with yet another dead 18-year-old's regalia, sports posters, and girlie pin-ups, emblems of American adolescence and virility. A woman-soldier's room decorated with lush house plants. In a way that only photographs can evoke, they are about absence and presence at the same time: The young lives snuffed out and gone, their "human remains" left behind, helping keep their memory alive.
