Item description from seller

xii, 552 pages. Appendices. Bibliography. Oversized book, measuring 11-1/4 inches by 8-1/2 inches. Address sticker on fep. Inscribed by the author to Judge Thomas A. Lohm on the front free endpaper. Inscription reads: To Judge Thomas A. Lohm with my best wishes. Sincerely, Arthur R. Moore, July 11, 1983. There also is a letter to Judge Lohm from Arthur R. Moore laid into the front of the book; this letter reads: 8/27/84 Dear Judge Lohm, Mr. David Wortman has asked that I forward a copy of this page in my new revised edition which you can add as an insert to the copy of my book which he ordered sent to you last year. Best regards, Arthur R. Moore. A one page supplement has also been laid in. In June 1942, Judge Lohm enrolled in the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Four months later he was on convoy ships crossing the Atlantic, a treacherous route targeted by Nazi submarines. In the early years of World War II, the Allies nearly lost the war at sea. This book is a record of the trials of gallant American ships and brave men. Their suffering and loves contributed greatly to victory and the ending of this conflict. This book is a tribute to that unsung band of heroes, the men of the United States Merchant Marine in World War II. By highlighting the great risks run by the merchant marine in the Second World War, Captain Moore's fine work can do much to show thought to leaders throughout the country that shipping is indeed our fourth arm of defense. The staggering losses in ships and men must be memorialized, and this new book can help in this process. Captain Arthur R. Moore has devoted more than 20 years gathering data on the vital role played by the American Merchant Marine in winning World War II.
