Item description from seller

Rare privately printed, signed limited edition. Copyright 1943 by Otto Eisenschiml. Beautifully signed by Otto Eisenschiml at colophon page: "This volume was designed by Noman W. Forgue and printed in an edition limited to 500 copies. The typefaces are Linotype and Monotype Baskerville. Completed at Chicago, Illinois during November 1943. 'Otto Eisenschiml'". Dark red coated cloth boards, gilt cover and spine titles, moderate shelf wear, rub, toning; protected in stiff clear sleeve. Thick heavy stock light gray leaves, near fine. Few illustrations, glossy letter plate, etc. throughout. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Rare near fine signed limited edition. From frontispiece illustration: "Contemporary print of Lincoln's assassination, showing approximately the relative positions of Lincoln and Booth at the moment the latter entered the box. In reality, the back of Lincoln's head was turned toward the partition of the box on his left side which was so close that he occasionally rested his head against it during the play." The inspiration for the title of this Eisenschiml collection is derived from the Medical and Surgical History in the book "War of the Rebellion": "Case A. L______, aged 56 years, was shot in the head, at Washington, on the evening of April 14, 1865, by a large round ball, from a Derringer pistol." Contents: "Chapter 1. The Shot That Killed Lincoln; Chapter 2. When Doctors Disagree; Chapter 3. The Case of A. L______, Aged 56; Chapter 4. Could Lincoln Have Been Saved?; Chapter 5. If Lincoln Had Lived." Of the five studies which constitute this book, the chapter "Could Lincoln Have Been Saved?" first appeared in the April 1941 issue of The Coronet. "If Lincoln Had Lived" was originally published in the February 11, 1928 issue of The Advocate but is largely rewritten here. The other three are new and original pieces by Otto Eisenschiml for this volume. Four-page chapter notes section at back. Printed in the United States of America. 55 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
