A propos de cet article
Green cloth, gilt lettering on front cover, 8vo, 52-98 pp. This is the first published monograph by Turner (1861-1932), a revision of his master's thesis, presented before the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, at its annual meeting, January 3, 1889, and subsequently printed by the Historical Society. At the time, Turner was earning his Doctorate at Johns Hopkins University, so the paper was read by his friend and colleague Reuben Gold Thwaites at the annual meeting. An important work in the advancement of the career of the most influential American historian. Rebound with the original wraps bound in. A presentation copy, with "Compliments of the author" written at the top of the front wrap, and with a full-page handwritten letter, on Johns Hopkins University stationary, to Edward Duffield Neill (1823-1893) tipped in. The letter is dated April 30, 1889, thanking Neill for his research, which Turner was indebted to, and asking Neill for any criticism of Turner's essay. The letter is signed Frederick J. Turner. Neill was an historian and president of Macalester College in St. Paul. Turner was professor of history at the University of Wisconsin from 1890-1910, professor at Harvard from 1910-1922, and after retirement a visiting scholar at the Huntington Library. He was the leading advocate in the interdisciplinary study of history, using census data, geological and cartographical tools, and economic studies to explain historical events. His "Frontier Thesis" transformed the field of historiography. No marks in book, binding tight, covers clean with minor rubbing to gilt lettering. Book condition VG+. Binding: HB. Edition: First Edition.
