A propos de cet article

First American Edition. An incredible rarity, a surviving book from the White House Library of James and Dolley Madison which was destroyed when the British burned the White House on August 24, 1814. This book personally belonged to Dolley Madison who signed the book as First Lady in Washington while in residence at the White House in 1810. Signed and inscribed in ink on the first blank: “Washington - D.P. Madison - Jan 3 ‘10.” Hardbound in the original mulberry paper covered boards with some reinforcement to spine by an expert paper conservationist. Very good. As the British marched on Washington and with President James Madison away with U.S. troops, Dolley Madison spearheaded saving some materials from the White House before she had to flee. Historically, Madison is greatly remembered for ordering the large full length oil portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart to be taken from its massive frame and saved. On December 3, 1814, she wrote to Mary Latrobe, wife of Benjamin Latrobe the architect of Washington, D.C, and the White House, describing Madison’s efforts before the British troops arrived. Dolley Madison informed Latrobe about preserving the painting and told her that she was able to save almost all the silver, velvet curtains, a small clock, cabinet papers, and as she describes it “a few books.” This small petite book might possibly be one of those volumes as it would take up almost no space measuring 3 3/4 inches wide by 5 1/2 inches tall (9.32 by 13.97 cm) and weighs only several ounces. 144 pages. Enclosed in a custom brown morocco and cloth clamshell box. This book was very popular with women. There were 19 editions printed in the eighteenth century, four of which were American. Fables for the Ladies is a 1744 collection of moralizing fables written in verse by English dramatist and writer Edward Moore. The fables use animal characters, allegorical figures, and human archetypes to provide moral lessons.…
