Based at The Porch House, Westhide, her 'Westhide' prefix for Hereford and Jersey cattle was internationally acclaimed. Receiving this book at the Royal Show in 1950, the premier event for British agriculturalist. Edward Tudor (3rd Embassy 4th) it almost certainly refers to a high-status Hereford bull and 'Embassy' was a famous line of Hereford sires. At Royal Shows, it was common for breeders to gift books to fellow 'masters' and the gift to Kit Fraser represents a 'Master to Master' exchange between top-tier breeders. BOOK RESUME: Farmers Progress serves as a practical and philosophical sequel to Hendersons earlier work, acting as a comprehensive guide for those aspiring to master the craft of husbandry. The text is a rigorous distillation of the lessons learned at Oathill, covering the selection of land, the management of livestock, and the critical importance of financial discipline. Illustrated with eight double-sided plates depicting the livestock and layouts of a successful farm, the book moves beyond technical instruction to explore the 'art' of farming. Henderson emphasizes the necessity of the 'farmers eye' and the spiritual satisfaction found in creating a self-sustaining and beautiful landscape, providing a roadmap for the 'progress' of a novice into a master of the soil. AUTHOR: George Henderson (1904-1983) was one of the most remarkable and influential farmers of the 20th century, famously transforming the derelict Oathill Farm in Oxfordshire into a world-renowned model of productivity. Alongside his brother, he developed a system of 'intensive high-farming' that relied on keen observation and a relentless work ethic rather than massive capital investment. Henderson was a 'self-made' man in the truest sense, and his first book, The Farming Ladder, became an international bestseller. His sequels, including Farmer's Progress, solidified his reputation as a master practitioner who believed that farming was not just a business, but the highest form of human endeavor, requiring the skills of a biologist, an accountant, and a philosopher.…
