First editions, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Autographed for Edythe Robertson Reed in warm appreciation of all that she and hers mean to Virginia. Douglas Southall Freeman, Christmas, 1948". These opening volumes cover Washington's youth. Freeman died before completing the work, which was finished posthumously by his associates; he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1958. The recipient (1902-1991) was from a prominent Richmond family and involved in various social and educational organizations in the city. Freeman was editor of The Richmond News Leader and one of the city's foremost literary and civic figures. 2 vols, octavo. Original blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt.
