Item description from seller

Signed by Author. This contemporary account of the 1921-22 Washington Conference on the Limitation of Armament is inscribed by the author on the front free end paper: "To Judge Hause | With the sincere | regard of the author. | [signature]." The illustrations by Joseph Cummings Chase are portraits of four major participants: Justice Charles Evans Hughes (frontispiece), Balfour of the U.K. (facing p. 50), Briand of France (facing p. 98), and Kato of Japan (facing p. 226). The artist is best known for his war portraits. According to his biography in the Artists of Maine blog, "Chase was selected to be the Government's official overseas portrait painter for the war history record of the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.)." More than 100 of his works are in the collection of The National Portrait Gallery in Washington. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 290 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is generally tight, though the front hinge is a bit shaken. The paper remains bright and there are no marks. Bound in blue cloth over boards with an embossed border around the front cover. The spine is darkened from exposure and the title is in dull gilt. The corners are slighty turned in and the top front cover has taken a bump. There is some scattered foxing, particularly at the top of the plates and the facing pages. The top page edges are darkened (they may have been tinted in a dark blue). The side page edges are deckled (rough cut) and slightly browned. There is a small label from Brentano's Booksellers in Washington, D.C. on the inside rear cover. Illustrator: Joseph Cummings Chase. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; Washington, D.C.
