xii, 307, [1] pages. Inscribed by the author on the fep. Inscription reads January, 2004 To Pedro Kanof with warm personal regards L. Ronald Scheman. (believed to be Pedro Roberto Kanof the Italian engineer and inventor). Includes Acknowledgments, Introduction, Notes, Index, and About the Author. Also contains a section on Stormy Relationships, New Dynamics; Global Wallflower: Overlooking the Americas in U.S. Foreign Relations; The United States and Latin America: Tackling History; U.S. Security: Shifting Realities; The Emerging Inter-American Partnership; The Trauma of the 1980s; Where the Puck Is Going: The World Changes; Poverty and the Lack of Education: The Dormant Volcano; and Undermining Prosperity: Corruption and Narcotics. The second section is The Americas in the Global Economy: Building a Greater America; Commerce and Foreign Policy; The New Americans; The New Geopolitics of Latin America; The Muse of the Markets; Trade and Integration; Investment and Economic Growth; and Building a Greater America. Almost ten years after economic reform began to sweep Latin America and the Caribbean, promising new investment and jobs, poverty remains the central concern. While the adjustments advocated by economic experts--privatizing state enterprises, stopping inflation, liberalizing trade--led to a surge of capital, in most countries, they have not been able to provide a better life. The example of the leading countries--Chile, Mexico, and Brazil--demonstrate that economic growth has a tangible and demonstrable effect on poverty, has been replicated in few countries. L. Ronald Scheman was a specialist in international trade, development and finance who from 2000 to 2004 was director general of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development. For more than four decades, Mr. Scheman worked in the public and private sectors on issues relating to international economic development and cooperation. He was the U.S. executive director of the Inter-American Development Bank, a legal consultant and adviser on international financial matters to U.S. businesses and Latin American governments, and an organizer of Latin American studies programs among Washington area universities. Lloyd Ronald Scheman was born in Brooklyn. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1953 and from Yale Law School in 1956. He began his legal career in Brazil. After coming to Washington in 1962, he did legal work for the Organization of American States and helped found the Pan American Development Foundation, where his work included providing financial assistance to low-income communities. He was the author of several books, including "Greater America," published in 2003. Can democracy develop in Latin America without United States assistance? Why should the United States care? Why is Latin America relevant to U.S. economic growth in global competition? In Greater America: A New Partnership for the Americas in the 21st Century L. Ronald Scheman argues that our future lies not in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East but right here in our own backyard, the Western Hemisphere. He shows how the political and cultural legacy of colonization, immigration, assimilation and pluralism binds North, Central and South America, and how the trends in market growth and resources make the Americas a rich prize in global trade. Despite the tendency of many northerners to underestimate our ties, we are closer to our southern cousins than to any other societies. That relationship will be increasingly stronger given the growing and irrepressible influence of Latino and Caribbean populations in the U.S. For Latin America, the linkage to the U.S. is essential for attracting investment and creating the jobs necessary to overcome its oppressive heritage of poverty and to provide opportunity for a young population that will increasingly expect a better standard of living. Most important, Greater America demonstrates how closer ties with Latin America will help build a stronger U.S. ec.…

Can democracy develop in Latin America without United States assistance? Why should the United States care? Why is Latin America relevant to U.S. economic growth in global competition? In Greater America: A New Partnership for the Americas in the 21st Century L. Ronald Scheman argues that our future lies not in Europe, Asia, or the Middle East but right here in our own backyard--the Western Hemisphere.
Most important, Greater America demonstrates how closer ties with Latin America will help build a stronger U.S. economy while reducing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He argues that only a NATO-like coalition in the Americas will defeat the drug traffickers, and that a major program to build infrastructure is essential to make trade agreements work.
This book celebrates the contribution of the Americas as one of the more important factors in the spread of human freedom in the last half millennium. It makes the case for the unlimited potential of the Americas and shows how it can be unleashed through greater political and economic integration.
