Synopsis
After ten hard years inside, Hero is out. Released into a mystifying and dangerous world of spivs, crooks, bad jobs and lousy accommodation, he slowly starts to fight back. Hero leads a gang of ex-mental hospital patients - Lockjaw, Bonecrusher and Sligo - in a stand against the might of the underworld. His outlandish plans to thwart his persecutors escalate from stealing a prize bull, to grand theft, and on to the most dangerous heist in town. By the end Hero will either be free at last, or six feet under... Hero of the Underworld is a darkly humorous, uplifting tale of redemption, and of getting even in the strangest way imaginable.
À propos de l?auteur
Jimmy Boyle was born in 1944 and raised in Glasgow's notorious Gorbals area. His early years were spent in the grip of the Gorbals' culture and he embarked on a life of crime, eventually being sentenced to life in prison at the age of twenty-three for a murder he did not commit. The brutality of the prison regime is graphically described in his two autobiographies, A Sense of Freedom, which was also made into a film, and The Pain of Confinement. Since his release in 1982 Jimmy Boyle has founded and worked for Gateway Exchange, a centre to help young people at risk.
