A propos de cet article

1 leaf [ad for Woman's Right to Labor; or, Low Wages and Hard Work. Three Lectures by Mrs. C. H. Dall.], xiii, 402 pp, 1 unnumbered leaf. Original cloth. Pieces missing at top & bottom of spine (moreso at bottom of spine). Cloth worn along top & bottom edges of covers. Corners of covers very worn. First Edition. "Dall researched and wrote articles that were among the earliest examples of women's studies in America: studies of women of the past whom history had neglected or maligned, whose lives she now interpreted in a positive light" (Helen R. Deese, ed., Daughter of Boston, The Extraordinary Diary of a Nineteenth Century Woman Caroline Healey Dall, p. 176). The Preface is signed "Caroline H. Dall" (p. x). In her Preface, Dall writes: "The 'Studies' were written nearly eight years ago, on an impulse given by the dissatisfaction I felt concerning the character of much of the biographical work which the newly awakened interest in woman had called out. . . . These 'Studies' were printed, hardly published, in a journal [The Una] devoted to the interests of woman; and this printing was an advantage, because, both in this country and in Europe, it brought them before eyes well qualified to decide upon their worth, and to whose gentle, appreciative glance I owe my willingness to preserve them. . . (pp. v, vii). The chapters in Part I are: I. Aspasia. II. Hypatia. III. The Countess Matilda. IV. Cassandra Fedele. V. The Women of the House of Montefeltro. VI. The Women of Bologna. VII. The Contributions of Women to Medical Science (pp. 135-168). VIII. The Duties and Influence of Women. IX. Marie Cunitz, the Mathematician. X. Madame de Stael. XI. Margaret Fuller (pp. 226-248). XII. "The Great Lawsuit": Marie Astell; Mary Wollstonecraft; Margaret Fuller (pp. 249-264). Part II -- Fancies (pp. 267-386). Dr. Lowell and His Ministry (pp. 389-402). 8 of the 12 chapters in this book were originally published in The Una (1853-1855): I, II, III, IV, VI, VIII, IX, X. Quoting Wikipedia about Dall: " Dall became an active participant in the Boston Women's Rights movement. She was soon an active lecturer and writer on the topic, and organized the New England Women's Rights Convention, along with suffragist Paulina Davis. Also with Davis she founded Una, a journal devoted to woman's rights, and the pioneer publication of its kind. After deciding that she did not like working with groups, Dall turned to writing as her principal means of addressing women's equality. Her most prominent works from this time included Historical Pictures Retouched: a Volume of Miscellanies [offered here], which highlighted previously ignored women in history, and a collection of lectures entitled The College, the Market, and the Court; or Woman's Relation to Education, Labor, and Law (1867) in which she argued that the modern woman was no longer content to be in the domestic sphere and should be allowed to participate in public life.". …
