A propos de cet article

Blue boards bound in quarter vellum, titled in gold on white spine Housed in blue paper covered slipcase with title plate on front designed by Hockney 120 pages, unpaginated Signed by 22 of the 29 contributors in various inks, with 26 colour facsimile drawings by Hockney Numbered 87 of 250 David Hockney (1937-2026) was the greatest British artist of the past hundred years. In 1991, he collaborated with the poet and novelist Stephen Spender (1909-1995) to produce this extraordinary edition for the sole purpose 'to raise money for people living with AIDS'. Hockney drew the illustrations for each letter, using his characteristic brightly coloured ink and pencil, and they invited twenty-six writers to contribute. Each was assigned a letter of the alphabet and invited to offer a poem or short essay on whichever letter inspired them. For example, the letter 'J' reminds Ian McEwan of a moment on a Mediterranean beach near Tripoli. While for Ted Hughes, 'S' becomes a winding journey, traversing a life-time of surreal associations. Every single writer they approached agreed to contribute, with the exception of Norman Mailer. But according to Spender's introduction, Mailer's 'letter refusing seemed such a good model for Polite Rejection that we decided to publish it as his contribution - or his lack of such - anyway'. This rare copy has been signed by Hockney and Spender as well as an extraordinary twenty of the twenty-seven contributing writers, namely Doris Lessing, William Boyd, Margaret Drabble, Martin Amis, William Golding, Patrick Leigh Fermor, Nigel Nicolson, Seamus Heaney, Douglas Adams, Julian Barnes, Craig Raine, Kazuo Ishiguro, Iris Murdoch, V. S. Pritchett, Erica Jong, Arthur Miller, John Updike, John Julius Norwich, Susan Sontag, Joyce Carol Oates, Norman Mailer, and Ian McEwan. This copy has minor discolouration to the corners of slipcase and a very small stain to front of same. Otherwise it is a near fine copy. …
