Rare réimpression parisienne de la traduction française, par Jean de Gutery, des essais moraux très populaires d'A. de Guevara (1481-1545), prédicateur espagnol, conseiller de Charles Quint et évêque de Cadix (plus tard de Mondonedo). La collection comprend également son récit de la guerre des Communautés de Castille, menée par les comuneros (1520-1521) contre Charles Quint. "Les Épîtres dorées (Epístolas familiares, 1539 et 1541) eurent aussi un grand succès. L'humour, la vie, le mouvement, les renseignements qu'elles renferment sur les mentalités, la cour et la vie du temps leur communiquent un charme et un intérêt incontestables. À travers ces ?uvres et quelques autres qu'il a publiées, Guevara apparaît comme un acteur et un témoin lucide de son époque" (Augustin Redondo). Ex-libris manuscrit d'Antonius Van Muyden, du couvent de Zepperen, sur les gardes et la page de titre, avec la date de 1573. Quelques passages soulignés et annotations, probablement de la main de Van Muyden. 3 parties en un volume in-8 de (8) ff., 352 (mal chiffrées 235), 304, 256 pp., vélin ivoire à rabats, filet doré en encadrement sur les plats, large fleuron ovale doré orné de feuilles d'olivier au centre, dos lisse orné de roulettes et de fleurons dorés, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque). Belle édition française, imprimée sur deux colonnes et donnée par Abel l'Angelier, contemporaine des Essais de Montaigne. Parues pour la première fois en 1539, les Epistolas familiares d'Antonio de Guevara connurent un immense succès européen attesté par de nombreuses rééditions et traductions - la première française en 1556 par Guttery, sous le titre d'Epîtres dorées, reprise ici. Prédicateur franciscain, Guevara (1481-1545) fut conseiller et historiographe de Charles Quint, avant d'être nommé évêque de Cadix puis de Mondonedo. À travers ses Épîtres, dont plusieurs fictives, adressées à des personnages contemporains (duc d'Albe, grand connétable de Castille, etc.) ou des figures de l'Antiquité (Trajan, Zénobie, etc.), Guevara développe, dans son style oratoire, des principes de morale utiles aux princes, aux courtisans et aux honnêtes hommes. C'est à ce titre que les Epistres dorées, sorte de correspondance universelle, furent lues avec un ?il critique par Montaigne. La troisième partie de l'ouvrage évoque en partie la guerre des Communautés de Castille (1520-1521), soulèvement contre l'autorité de Charles Ier d'Espagne (i. e. Charles Quint), épisode au cours duquel Guevara se rangea du côté des forces royales et s'efforça, par la prédication, d'amener les révoltés à résipiscence. Bel exemplaire en vélin doré de l'époque.
